Fire Fighting

a. The IC shall be the highest ranking officer responding to a call. If no officer is on the scene, the engineer will act as the IC. b. Turnouts or Wildland PPE is required on all calls except for EMS only. c. Your personal accountability tag is to be given to the engineer or designated safety officer upon arrival at the scene. d. Be responsible for your actions and watch those around you. e. Before attacking a fire, secure the area, remove any hazards possible, cut the power or call the electric company to do so, isolate propane tanks, search for victims if possible. f. Keep onlookers away from the fire scene. Enlist the aid of law enforcement personnel if available. g. Avoid verbal and physical confrontations with onlookers. In the event of an encounter with a hostile bystander, contact a senior officer so they can call dispatch to request police or sheriff’s officers. h. The use of an SCBA and your PPE is required on an interior attack or vehicle fire or other environment where the atmosphere is in question. i. In the event of a hazardous spill, secure the area and evacuate any area that may be in danger. If the chemical or material is of an unfamiliar nature, maintain security of the area and notify DPS. We will not attempt an approach of an unfamiliar substance. We do not have the proper equipment or training for this type of emergency. j. If an order given by an officer is unclear or you have doubts of the assignment, get clarification. Simple English (clear text) communication shall be used on all calls.
