In an effort to provide training to future Firefighters, the Concho Fire District in coordination with Future First Responders of America has organized a Junior Firefighters Program. Junior Firefighters are between the ages of 16 and 18 and are currently enrolled in the NAVIT Firefighter/EMT course of study or have completed this course or its equivalent.
Junior Firefighters must have a signed permission slip signed by both parents or guardian giving their permission to participate in activities outlined in Concho Fire Dept S.O.P’s for Junior Firefighters Program.
Junior Members may:
a. Operate equipment or perform tasks as allowed per child labor laws.
b. Ride in cabs of apparatus as a passenger to emergency incidents.
c. Attend and take part in supervised training activities.
d. Participate (with proper protective clothing) in a rehabilitation area of an emergency scene that does not expose the junior member to hazardous atmospheres.
e. Enter a structure only when accompanied by an adult firefighter and only when deemed safe by the incident commander.
f. Assist in cleanup at the incident scene after it has been declared safe.
g. Assist with support activities at emergency scenes that are outside any danger or hot zones.
Junior Members may not:
a. Perform fire suppression activities.
b. Drive any emergency vehicle during an emergency incident.
c. Respond directly to the scene of an incident.
d. Respond to hazardous materials incidents.
e. Perform overhaul activities except when the structure has been declared safe by the Incident Commander.
f. Use self-contained breathing apparatus except in supervised training.
g. Participate in extrication activities, actual ice-rescue activities or direct traffic at the scene of an emergency.
h. Climb aerial ladders or ground ladders exceeding 35 ft in height.
i. Climb any ladders or be on a rooftop at an incident scene.
j. Drive any Department Vehicle.
k. Be substituted for trained personnel.
l. Be allowed to enter or remain in any IDLH atmosphere or environment.
