Policy and Guidelines 2026 · § 34

Corrective Action & Appeals

FB-SEC-52 · hr

Purpose
Progressive discipline, plus the right to skip steps when the act is severe. At-will still applies.
PURPOSE: Promote a safe, harmonious and effective work force. Progressive steps (typical, not mandatory): 1. Verbal counseling — documented in the supervisor’s file, non-disciplinary. 2. Verbal reprimand — written memo, signed, may go to the central file. 3. Written reprimand — discussed with the Fire Chief first; member may attach a response. 4. Disciplinary suspension without pay — not more than 30 consecutive calendar days, and not more than 30 days in any 12-month period. 5. Demotion — Personnel Action Report plus letter, signed by member, supervisor and Chief. 6. Dismissal — Fire Chief approves. Severe conduct may skip straight here. CFD is at-will. Beyond a written reprimand the member gets a letter of intended discipline and three calendar days to respond in writing. Appeals: initial probationary personnel generally cannot appeal. Others appeal written reprimand / suspension / demotion / dismissal in three steps (supervisor → next manager → Chief). Chief is final on anything less than dismissal. Grievance against the Chief goes to the Board Chair.
